Please note; The medical wavier requires a “yes” or “no” answer. If you answer “yes” to any question, you will have to have your doctor give you permission to take the class. If in doubt of how to answer a question, please call us.

Equipment

We can provide you with a mask, fins and snorkel to use, but we highly recommend every new diver buy his/hers own prior to the first pool session. We consider your mask and fins “personal gear” as it needs to be fitted to each person to provide a comfortable fit. You will become a safer and more confident diver as you will be training with your new equipment and becoming comfortable with it. Please do not buy any equipment prior to the first class! We will be going over different types of equipment the first night of class so you will better understand what you need. We also have very good deals on equipment we offer students on high quality SCUBA equipment!! Recommended equipment with mask, snorkel, fins and neoprene booties average about $175.00.

Air tanks, regulators, buoyancy compensators and weights are provided!!!

CLASSROOM

This is the academics part of your SCUBA class. You will learn about:

SCUBA equipment, different types and how the equipment works, what to buy and not buy!

SCUBA skills, reasons you need to know them and why we practice them.

The physics of diving; pressures, sounds and temperatures.

Phislogical aspects, how your body is effected by your new underwater environment.

The environment, what you will see and how you affect it.

Continuing education; we cover other classes you can take to improve your SCUBA skills.

The PADI/YMCA class is designed for the student to read and complete knowledge reviews for each chapter prior to the classroom session. In class we will first review your knowledge reviews. We will then focus the class around areas students do not understand or would like more discussion on. Areas students fully understand, we skip over, this allows for a better use of time and focusing on areas of interest. We give a quiz at the end of each chapter reviewed in class. There in a final exam that will be given at the end of the class. A score of 75% or better is required to pass the class!

We like to see the first three (2) chapters read and the knowledge reviews completed prior the first night of class!

Your assignment for the next classes will be given out during the first class.

POOL SESSIONS

In the pool is were we will practice skills allowing you to become a safe and confident SCUBA diver. At the end of your pool training you should have gained confidence in yourself your equipment and your SCUBA abilities and be well prepared for your open water certification dives.
Skills are taught in progression, building upon each other. The pace of learning depends on the individual. It is very common for a student to need extra practice doing a specific skill. Never should a student feel any pressure to keep up with the class. We have more that one instructor in every class, allowing “one on one” training to help a student practice a skill they need help with.

SWIMMING ABILITY: You need to be comfortable in the water. We require you to tread/float in water for 10 min. You will need to swim any stroke 200 meters (not timed) or 300 meters with mask, fins and snorkel.

Water temperature! The water temperature in the pool is about 80’. Although this sounds warm, we will be in the pool for hours. Most of the time you will not be moving much, so you may get cold! We have Wetsuites for sale starting at $74.95

We provide the basic SCUBA gear, BC, regulator, tanks and weights.

Please try to be ready to enter the pool at the time listed. Pool time is very expensive and we try to get the most of our pool time. You will need the following for the pool:

Bathing suit and towel

Your personal SCUBA gear, mask, fins, snorkel, booties

A drink (plastic bottle) and snack.

Exposure protection (wetsuite) Although the pool water is 80’, you will get cold!!

If you own SCUBA gear and want to practice in it.

CERTIFICATION DIVES

After you complete your classroom and pool training, your next step to complete your certification dives. Four (4) are required for certification. You will take the knowledge and pool skills you learned and apply them in an open water environment. We charge $225.00 for this part of the training, included is your fees for your certification card!
You have several options to complete this phase:

Locally we do certification dives at Dutch Springs Lake in Allentown, PA. It is a very nice dive training facility and is a great place to dive. The water is very clear, usually 40-50 ft of visibility! We start training at Dutch in mid-May and continue through October.

We schedule trips to Key Largo, Florida on a regular basis. It is warm year around, so we can do this anytime of the year. We also take trips to other Caribbean locations during the year!

We can also give you a “referral form” showing you have completed all your classroom and pool work. You can take this to any dive location and have a local instructor complete your certification. There is no charge from us for a referral.

As always, please call us with your questions!
